It's very interesting to know how music bands got their names. There are stories behind them ---intentional and accidental. For the readers, I am so eager to share these with you.
Here are some of them;
CHICAGO
Originally named Chicago Transit Authority but had to shorten it after the city of Chicago sued them for using that name.
METALLICA
While drummer, Lars Ulrich helped his friend name a heavy metal magazine, Ulrich came with 2 suggestions. They are 1) Metal Mania (which the friend used for the magazine) and, 2) Metallica.
DEF LEPPARD
Named after a drawing done by vocalist Joe Elliot of a leopard with no ears---a "deaf leopard."
THE REPLACEMENTS
When they started, they were filling in for another band at the last minute. The emcee asked what was their band name, singer Paul Westerberger answered, "The replacements."
BLACK SABBATH
They named their band after a 1963 horror movie entitled, "Black Sabbath."
ALICE COOPER
Lead singer Vincent Furnier is claiming that he got his name from an Ouija board , through which he met a spirit with that same name.
WHITE STRIPES
Yea, the band members Jack and Meg's last name is White, but the band is actually named after Meg's love for red-and-white-striped peppermint candies.
EURYTHMICS
They named their band after an 1890's system of music instruction that emphasized physical response.
WEEZER
Lead singer Rivers Cuomo had asthma when he was a kid. He adapted this name for his band.
THE SMITHS
Wanting to have a name that's generic so it would not suggest anything about the kind of music they're playing, they opted for this common English name.
NINE INCH NAILS
While choosing for possible names for their band, singer Trent Reznor opted for this because "it still sounded so good after two weeks" and because it could easily be abbreviated. Actually, nine inch nails are used for coffins.
COLDPLAY
Would you believe they stole it from another band who had broken up? That band got the name from a book by poet Philip Horky, entitled, "Child's Reflections, Cold Play."
EVERCLEAR
From an extremely strong (190 proof) alcohol
FALL OUT BOY
While on their early years , they asked the audience what their name should be. Someone yelled , "Fall Out Boy." They took the name not knowing that it's the name of a character on The Simpsons. When they found out, they were afraid they might be sued for it. The producers of The Simpsons also thought the band had the name first, and that they were going to be sued. Neither of them was.
BADFINGER
They were originally named Iveys. Paul McCartney, who signed them with his Apple Records label, McCartney changed their name to Badfinger. It was the original title of the Beatles song, "A Little Help from my Friends."
TLC
It's not "Tender Loving Care" but the abbreviations are from the first letters of the members' first names; Tionne, Lisa, and Chili.
EMINEM
His real name is Marshall Mathers. He gave himself the name from his initials, M and M, spelled out phonetically.
XTC
Singer Andy Partridge got it from an old movie, where the actor Jimmy Durante said, "That's it, I'm in ecstasy!"
MOODY BLUES
From one of the band's favorite songs, Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigos."
WINGS
While waiting for his wife Linda giving birth in a hospital wing, Paul McCartney thought Wings was a good name for a band.
